Māori workers experience disproportionate levels of harm across Aotearoa’s workplaces.
National surveys show higher exposure to bullying, racial harassment, discrimination, and unsafe conditions compared with the general workforce. Māori are over-represented in high-risk industries where injuries and fatalities remain well above national averages, and under-represented in leadership roles where pay gaps and stalled promotion persist. Many carry the added burden of “cultural loading.” When Māori do speak up, they often face reprisals or indifference, leaving problems unresolved and trust eroded. In global context, New Zealand ranks among the OECD’s worst for workplace bullying, and within that pattern, the sharper edge of harm falls on Māori communities.
Workplace Justice NZ is determined to confront this injustice directly.
While we are not a Māori organisation, we are committed to embedding tikanga principles of fairness, dignity, and collective responsibility into everything we do. Our work focuses on prevention and accountability: pressing for stronger protections in law, promoting a model code of practice for employers, and ensuring that complaints processes deliver justice rather than silence. By standing alongside Māori workers, whānau, unions, and employers who want to do better, we aim to change workplace culture across Aotearoa. Our goal is that Māori voices are protected, mana is upheld, and every workplace becomes a place where whānau thrive and potential is realised.
Your support is crucial in our fight against workplace bullying. Consider making a donation to help us continue our important work in advocating for justice and safety in workplaces across New Zealand.
